Today is Fang’s one year ampuversary! I plan to spend the day with him, give him loads of treats, and lots of play! (I will likely update this post later with pictures).
In the meantime, though, I just wanted to say that one year ago today we made the frightening decision to go through with Fang’s amputation, and we made that decision largely because of the information and support we received from the Tripawds community. I am so grateful that you guys showed Fang and I how to “be more dog.” We are thankful every day, for Fang’s life and his happiness, for the support of the community, and for all the Tripawd heroes that have come before us to show us the way.

Fang it’s been a year already? WOWWWEEEE! Hoppy one year ampuversary you gorgeous kitty, we are so happy and proud to be part of your celebration and your amazing life on three legs.
You and your Momma have done so much for this community in so many ways! Ever since you joined us, we’ve had other cat tripawds hop along the Tripawds community train and it’s been a refreshing, pawesome time ever since. Felines bring a whole new energy to the community and we plan on making it more and more feline-friendly in the coming months.
Thank you Fang and Chantal, for all you’ve done for this community and future feline families who are unsure about what life on 3 legs is like. Because you took the time to join us and share your story, an amputation recommendation isn’t nearly as scary as before for many, many families out there.

Fang and I had a lot of fun today (it was a double celebration, of course, as if you might remember Fang’s ampuversary is also my birthday :P).

What a beautiful cat you have! I have three black cats myself, and one of them has a deformed front leg. She was born with it so she doesn’t know any different, but she can’t use it much for walking. She is the sweetest cat I’ve ever had. A total love bug. I am starting to get concerned cause she has a soft kind of lump around the good front shoulder and I’m wondering if its from the extra weight on that leg. Need to take her to the vet soon to find out. I love her so much. I’m just really hoping its not serious.

Thank you very much. We are day 5 into our kitty’s front leg’s amputation. He had a tumor as well and while we resisted at first we finally decided to go the leg amputation route. I think that the hardest thing is watching him as we are unsure as to what is normal behavior and what is not. While he seems generally okay, he is sleeping a lot. Also, he has eaten very little since the surgery which is concerning. I am trying to tempt him but he is not showing much interest. So if anyone has insight, we would really appreciate it.
Linda – Hey there! Well, I know this is a difficult journey to go on, but you’ll be glad that you gave your kitty a second chance at life. 🙂 Of course, I’d be happy to share some insight! Pain medications (as well as pain itself, if kitty is off of the medication) really take away your cat’s cravings for food. This is normal. Just like how we often don’t feel like eating after surgery, especially with pain medications. I found that after we stopped Fang’s medication and after he’d had some solid time to recover from the soreness of surgery, his appetite went right back to where it was before. But before that, he didn’t want to eat much of anything. Also, pain medications make kitty constipated – has your cat been able to go number two yet? If not, he might not feel like eating yet because of that. If you are having that issue, make sure that he is getting liquids anywhere that you can offer them (wet food, water, etc). Also, if that isn’t enough, you can try some canned mashed up pumpkin (not pie filling) or a small bit of Miralax mixed in his food. Sleeping a lot is also very common right now. Healing takes a lot of energy, and so does building up the muscles in his remaining front leg. He will get back on his feet – the more he heals, the more normal he will be. And, of course, if you’re ever worried about something, ring up your vet. It will make you feel better. 🙂
